SHORTS TO CHECK OUT NOW

“BLOOD RUNS DOWN” by Zandashé Brown
When a woman undergoes a frightening transition, her vigilant daughter must decide between saving her or protecting herself.

Stunner. Absolutely gorgeous costuming, set decoration, and cinematography. The ethereal, creamy lighting and muted colors, the haunting string score, and the rich, nuanced performances express the complicated relationship between a Black mother and her daughter. It hit me in the gut, and I found myself thinking a lot about what I took away from it: that generational pain and trauma cannot be washed away, it lives in our bones–but so does love.

“BRACKISH” by Christa Boarini
A menacing spirit lurks in the mangroves waiting for an unsuspecting victim. She is the Brackish Undertaker, cursed by the crown she wears.

Eerie and sublime, a magical realism-soaked Ophelia in the water story shot in the most beautiful of swampy settings.

“EAT YOUR HEART OUT” by Giovanni Tortorici
Marceline is vegetarian, kind of lonely, and ready for her date with a cannibal.

Like a Carson McCullers novel come to life, tinged with magic. A gorgeous 16mm short with two raw, authentic actors whose chemistry and comedic timing jumps through the screen. This short feels all too true to a first date between two very lonely people.

“JORDAN” by Ebony Blanding
An adventurous tween finds a distressed mermaid on a fishing trip with her father, and they take her back to Atlanta to care for her–only to discover she is not exactly what she seems.

A sweet and poignant look at the stubborn earnestness of childlike wonder. Keep an eye out for Ebony, whose short doc with filmmaker Kate Hinshaw (featured below), TEN LEAVES DILATED, swept the festival circuit!

“KUDZU” by Kate Hinshaw
A young woman returns to her Georgia home for the last time and is confronted by a particularly invasive strand of Kudzu that forces her to reckon with her past.

Kate Hinshaw’s work is always intriguing and textured, blending handmade film processes with narrative and documentary. If you have a chance to see her short doc collaboration with the previously featured Ebony Blanding, TEN LEAVES DILATED, don’t miss it!

“VIOLET BUTTERFIELD: MAKEUP ARTIST FOR THE DEAD” by Brooke H. Cellars
Violet Butterfield, a mortician beautician, helps her clients find the beauty in death they could have had in life.

A crowd favorite! The amount of people who have contacted me to learn more about this film after Gothic South Film Night is so exciting. An intensely specific, magical 1960s aesthetic, modern empathetic themes, and sharp humor blend together at Writer/Director Brooke H. Cellars’s deft hand.

“THE KNOCKING MAN!” by David Tabor
